Harshly treated by a drunken father, with no mother to care for him, David fell into bad company and was living on the streets when our OKM family first connected with him. Only 11 years old at the time and already getting on the wrong side of the law, this Ugandan family were eager to draw David in and show him he was loved and special. Such a contrast to the message he had had from his broken family and the village community who had chased him away! Probation officers, aware of the family’s interest in David, urged them to legally foster him.

Now 17 years old,
David is fully part of his compassionate OKM family and is noted for his happy smiles! He has worked hard at school and dreams of becoming a doctor.
David’s story is an inspiration, but it wouldn’t be the same story without OKM supporters. Almost five years ago we started to assist this family who had such big hearts but also huge financial and practical challenges. According to the World Bank, 85% of Ugandans live on less than $1 per day. The average yearly cost of education for 1 Ugandan child is approximately 150 GBP ($250 USD).
Regular education is something we feel committed to provide for all the 135 children within the OKM network. Together we can give more orphans like David a face, a family and a future. Give a little Egg-ucation now and unlock a future of hopes and dreams to come true! You can be a part of our efforts through our current campaign:
Your gift of 3 GBP ($5 USD) represents 1 “Egg”
1 “Egg” = 1 week of Egg-ucation for an African child.
Join the Egg-ucation Challenge!
Our goal is to gather 10,000 Eggs to enable orphans and vulnerable children like David to realize their potential through education. To give some Eggs, click on one of the links to the right. If you are giving from the USA use the blue link. From the UK and the rest of the world use the “Just Giving” link.
100% of your gift, (after transaction charges for USA donors), goes directly to Africa.

Sosthene grew up in Central African Republic (CAR), living on the streeets from the age of 8 when his parents divorced. He lived the life of an orphan for most of his childhood, even for several years before his parents passed away. A few years later, his involvement in a local church blessed him with accommodation and the ability to start his own small business. After saving his earnings, he was able to rent a house that eventually became a place to look after his younger siblings.

After high school, university, and a stint working in the telecommunications industry, he was introduced to Youth With A Mission (YWAM), completing his first training course in Senegal in 2004. Since then, he has worked in various African countries as both a student and staff member. At the end of 2007 he moved to Montana, USA, to start a nine month training course, and it is there that he met his wife, Kara.

Kara was born and raised in Montana and she always had a heart for Africa. After a bit of time in university, she joined YWAM in 2004. Her first training course started in Washington state and moved to Senegal and Gambia for the practical outreach. This time secured in her a heart for Africa and laid the foundation for meeting her husband. After this training course, Kara took some time to work before deciding to continue her educational training.

Sosthene & Kara completed their training course in mid-2008 and were married at the beginning of 2009. They are working with Orphans Know More in England for a period of practical learning, study and mentorship but their sights are set on moving to CAR. They say about their vision “Our heart is to be a voice for the voiceless and to help the hungry ones fish for themselves.” We are so excited to welcome them to our team!!

Doug and Ruby are celebrating their 25th anniversary. They have everything they need. They always say not to worry about getting them gifts. But I’d like to mark the occasion with something special.

Why not give a gift that can really make a difference?

Whether buying for family or friends, this creative way of gift-giving means that your donation helps bring hope to children whose lives have been marked by difficulties and loss.

The daily struggle to feed children, clothe them, pay for their schooling and necessary medical treatment can be overwhelming for those affected by AIDS. When you live in a leaking, overcrowded mud hut as well, hopelessness can lead to giving up. We met families on the edge of despair. What a difference a simple, well constructed home can make, a life or death difference for some families in Uganda.

OKM is excited to announce a partnership with Habitat for Humanity to build new homes for needy families beginning in 2008. Each family must own a small amount of land and they will contribute to the construction by supplying labour and some materials. They will also repay a small monthly amount over the next five years. These repayments will go into a fund to help more orphans and widows. At least 8 widows we work with will not qualify for a home, because they do not own any land. They also struggle to see how they can make enough bricks. We would like to help them by raising money for plots of land to build a house and have a vegetable garden. The estimate is £1,000 per family for the land. Some of these women are HIV positive and adequate accommodation, nutrition and Anti-Retroviral (AVR’s) can help them live and care for their children.

If you would like to help with fundraising by holding an OKM Supper Party with friends or in some other way, please let us know. Our first priority is to sustain our commitment to enable the nearly 150 children in OKM families to be educated and cared for.

So what are the other challenges? We want to distribute improved seed for growing maize, beans, ground-nuts, and soya. The cost is approximately £7 to supply a family with adequate seed. An ongoing challenge is school uniforms which cost about £6 for a primary child, or £12 for a student in secondary school. These are some of the small scale challenges, but we also have an exciting and ambitious project to extend and improve housing for our families this year. To donate online click here. More soon!
No, not the title for a funny movie but a few of the elements of a challenging fund-raiser. The aim was to walk the three peaks in Yorkshire in 12 hours starting out at first light one Saturday morning in July. Things went fairly well on Whernside but as the team approached the second peak of Ingelborough the heavens opened and the wind came in horizontally!! The Pen Y Gent cafe offered some brief but welcome refreshment and respite before the five took to the last hill. Wet and cold, the final descent seemed to take forever but all made it home safely.

Congrats to you all on an amazing achievement. Even though the elements went against you we were with you all the way!
The skies withheld their forecast rain and the guests came dressed to the nines to enjoy the second Orphans Know More Summer Party, held in the Oval grounds on Saturday 23rd of June. Attended by 200 people, organized by three vivacious and creative local Harpenden ladies, and run by a host of generous volunteers, the evening was a huge success. It achieved its purpose in raising awareness and support for the Ugandan families who are opening their hearts and homes to many children orphaned by war and HIV AIDS. It was a great honor to be joined by Sam and Irene Kisolo, who lead Orphans Know More in Uganda. Sam shared their story of adopting orphaned children into their family, and the importance of children being in families. Throughout the evening, which included dinner followed by a dance, generous donations were given and money was raised through a silent auction, sales of handmade Ugandan crafts, and a 10 pound draw. The event organizers finished in the early hours of Sunday morning, tired but very pleased that more people had heard about the plight of these many beautiful children in Uganda, and hopeful that the word and support will continue to spread.
