In early November 2005, three individuals left from London and Harpenden on behalf of Youth With A Mission (YWAM) and Orphans Know More. Their challenge was to film and capture the essence of a crisis and a story of hope in the midst of it. The destination was Jinja, Uganda and the crisis; what to do with a population swamped by children labelled with the title and stigmatisation of being an HIV Orphan. Uganda has in excess of 2 million orphaned children and is now facing the dilemma of how to raise them in a supportive and caring environment. YWAM Uganda believes strongly that an orphan is no longer an orphan but a child when they are placed into a family. It is this sense of security and love, every child’s right, which they seek to provide to the children in their community. With this in mind, thirty local families have adopted over one hundred and fifty children by opening their homes and hearts to their local community.
It is true that what YWAM Uganda has started is a drop in the ocean, but when you look at the individual cases it no longer seems so small. Take for example Sam Kisolo and his wife Irene, they have four children biologically and eleven by adoption (including a severely disabled young man, and a beautiful young girl fighting HIV). The team filming were privileged to spend a lot of time during the week with this family of 17. The most striking impression was of the loving and accepting nature of the entire family and their joy in difficult circumstances. They have managed to capture and maintain a sense of family with their 15 children that is very rare in our Western culture with all of its apparent privileges and convenience. YWAM Uganda is hoping to double their efforts over the next year, enabling many more orphans to experience a healthy and hopeful childhood. These children are after all, the future of their country. The resulting film will raise awareness of what is happening in Uganda and tell the story of millions of children who have no voice. In the process of the filming three lives were touched and three people were deeply inspired. The people of Uganda may feel they are facing this crisis alone, but Orphans Know More want to stand with them and enable others to contribute in whatever capacity they can. There will be a short DVD telling this story in early 2006.
Orphans Know More is a relationally based partnership working to give orphans a Face, a Family and a Future. Our pilot project assists Ugandan families caring for 150 HIV/AIDS orphans and vulnerable children.
